The vision of launching India to the forefront of skill development and job creation came one step closer to reality today with the formal launch of the first courses at the Indian Institute of Skills, Mumbai.

The Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Dr Mahendrath Nath Pandey, launched the first two courses at IIS in Mumbai. The Institute is being operationalized and managed by Tata IIS, following the signing of a formal agreement with the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship in November 2020.

The courses will be offered at the IIS interim campus at the National Skills Training Institute (NSTI), even as the Institute’s permanent campus is coming up in Chembur and will be fully operational by 2022.

Speaking at the launch event, Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey said, “With an aim to provide high-quality technical and vocational learning across various sectors, the foundation for state-of-the-art infrastructure was laid last year and today with the launch of its first set of courses at IIS Mumbai, I can proudly say that we are inching closer to achieve the vision of our Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi of making India the ‘Skill Capital of the World’. Following the footsteps of other prominent centres of education in the country, IIS Mumbai will be instrumental in imparting world-class training to help build a future-ready workforce. I extend my gratitude towards the Government of Maharashtra and Tata Group for extending support towards Skill India Mission and I am hopeful that this collaboration will transform the state’s youth from job seekers to job creators.”

To give wings to the Skill India Mission, the Indian government is working with Tata IIS to set up Indian Institute of Skills in Mumbai and Ahmedabad as world-class centres, which will have facilities comparable to training institutes in Germany, Switzerland and Singapore, but with unique features tailored to the Indian industry and employment landscape. The institutes will deploy a unique and differentiated Job Creation model with the objective of transforming the skilling and employment landscape in India.

The courses will be offered through partnerships with leading companies in automation, industrial control and pneumatics to fulfil the needs of the industry for automation and digital transformation. The courses will include modern training methodologies using digital and augmented learning platforms. While aimed at transforming candidates in terms of job readiness, they are also an important step towards offering higher order certifications.

The two courses launched are on Factory Automation, envisaged to be the foundation for future courses on Smart Manufacturing (Industry 4.0) technology and applications, to prepare youth for emerging job roles of the next five years and beyond.

There are plans to offer scholarships to the first 100 students along with attractive fee options during this initial launch phase. More details are available at [email protected]

Girish Krishnamurthy, Director, Tata IIS, said, “This is a key development in India’s journey to providing skilling and job-readiness to its youth. The Institute aspires to become a beacon to other institutions of its kind in the years to come.”
