Required Skillset To Make A Career In Green Organisations
The green economy will result in the creation of millions of new jobs and careers. However, providing new jobs is only a portion of the solution to the problem. It is vital to develop a suitably skilled workforce
Everybody is talking about green technology these days. Currently, there are millions of job opportunities in this domain, which are likely to increase in the coming years. The green economy is envisioned to generate up to 24 million new green jobs by 2030.
With so many options, one may be considering a job in the green industry. The virtuous green career path necessitates the assistance of a knowledgeable mentor. With more than 229 million people in the age group of 15-24 years and 65% of the total population below 35, India has immense potential to leverage this green trend.
For the young guns looking to make a career among the green organisations, there is some set of essential skills that might come in handy in their journey:
Becoming Mindful and Aware of the Environmental Changes
To be environmentally aware, one has to recognise the need for conserving our natural resources. Promoting environmental awareness is a simple approach to take responsibility for the environment and help ensure a better future for our upcoming generations.
There are several issues that one can be mindful of. Let’s take the example of plastic waste. According to the Central Pollution Control Board report, as much as 3.3 million metric tonnes of plastic waste was generated in India in 2018-19 alone. On an individual level, if we can just separate our dry and wet wastes before throwing them into the dustbin, we can be a part of the go green movement.
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle
The golden rule of 3Rs —
● Reduce the amount of waste production
● Reuse items as much as you can before replacing them
● Recycle items whenever and wherever possible
Adopting the 3 R’s will also minimise the space required for the landfill sites, which are mainly used to dump wastes.
Alternate Energy Projects
Solar energy is considered the mother of all energies. Building a project around this can single-handedly take you miles and give you a global arena to attract major green energy corporations to consider your work.
Bio-fuel is yet another growing trend in the green energy market. It is probably the most economical method of employing alternate energy in our daily use. If one can take on a small project on developing a bio-digester in their backyard, they can literally reduce the use of LPG cooking gas by almost 35-40%.
Building Energy Efficient Systems
From green buildings to green appliances and green processes, building an efficient system that can significantly bring down the usage of non-renewable resources and carbon footprint per person is the need of the hour. If someone is looking for a career in this field, having the ability to build systems that can ensure mindful usage of nature-derived resources can be a huge leverage.
Ability to Encourage sustainable and Resource-efficient societies
A society that is resource-efficient and practices sustainable living can be a game-changer for the entire planet. If someone possesses the ability to encourage such behaviour and practices and can motivate others in the same direction, the green organisations would make sure that their doors are wide open for such talents. This extraordinary ability also demonstrates your leadership skills, whereas most people are mere followers.
Conclusion
The green economy will result in the creation of millions of new jobs and careers. However, providing new jobs is only a portion of the solution to the problem. It is vital to develop a suitably skilled workforce.
Following the World Economic Forum’s Davos Youth Recovery Plan 2021, over half of the young people believe they do not have the appropriate skills to secure an honest and decent employment opportunity in the next five to ten years. It will be pretty interesting to watch how our young guns innovatively approach this industry.
