A manager can never be successful just by obtaining a degree in management; s/he must also know how to apply various management principles in real-world situations, says D Shivakumar, Group Executive President - Corporate Strategy and Business Development, Aditya Birla Group.

He was speaking at the Gurugram chapter of Indian Business Literature Festival, a 21-city forum, organised by BW Businessworld, on Wednesday.

“Managing self is absolutely crucial and critical before we get to managing a team or managing a business,” said Shivakumar.

Shivkumar, who has authored “The Art of Management: Managing Yourself, Managing Your Team, Managing Your Business,” further added: “Fifty per cent of the impatience that we create with people is about how we manage our own time. Are we on time, do we complete on time, when we say we will deliver on x date at x time, do we actually do that.”

Shivkumar, a management guru, argues in his book that career management has essentially three elements to it – “managing yourself, managing your team, managing your business”. He has authored many other acclaimed books as well.
