Embracing Ethical Leadership: Shaping The Future of Organisations

Every organisation not just in India is very result-oriented. In this race, the organisation end up compromising on culture. "Even though the organisation know how culture is important in creating values still they don't invest in it," says Antony J. Alex at the third edition of BW People CEO - CHRO conclave 2023.

"In today's day and age technology has really changed the way people, brands and organisations choose to manage their reputation," says Antony J. Alex, founder and CEO, of Rainmaker.

In the era of technology where news travels so fast if an organisation is not on top of what they are doing then they will lose the race. "The essential conundrum the businesses are starting to face is between business and culture," he adds.

Every organisation not just in India is very result-oriented. In this race, the organisation end up compromising on culture. "Even though the organisation know how culture is important in creating values still they don't invest in it, says the Rainmaker CEO.

"In a survey, it was revealed one-fifth of the respondents indicate senior leadership works against the firm's corporate culture." He further points out.

"Investors are driving the culture to be immediate result-oriented" This is called the culture of quarterly gratification. This is what is driving the conundrum and hence one doesn't end up building a culture that is long-term.

Ethisphere conducted a survey, and according to their ethics index they listed  22 world's most ethical companies, they outperformed a comparable index of large-cap companies by a factor of 24 per cent. "Companies that are ethical are really growing faster. Ethics is most definitely the future and the future is here" says Alex.  Therefore as organisations it is important to put ethics first.

Coming to 'what is ethical leadership? ' he proceeds to explain managers, leaders, and senior leaders are the people who need to be focused on from the perspective of ethical leadership, this is what an organisation needs to be done.

"Companies that are driven by value focus more on long-term value for their employees which includes employees, customers, shareholders, and communities in which they operate," says the founder of Rainmaker.

These values are put into use when leaders embody them. "Leaders have to set goals beyond just financial success and leaders who prioritise values are the ones who find innovative ways to face challenges, they have the backing of the entire organisation with them as they are not leading by force but values and culture", he adds.

Now speaking of where HR comes into all of these. They play a critical role in all of these, the entire change requires the leadership of Human Resources. This is the group that is actually responsible for the growth of the employees. "If HR is able to start by defining the shared values by conducting an exercise and then push the management to walk the talk, then only it will make a difference", says Alex. This is how the HR will be driving the company's culture and results over time, he adds..

"It is important to create a brand identity that associates your brand with certain values and take it up together, make it one that everybody can identify", points out the CEO of Rainmaker.

Part of creating this brand identity ensures one has shared values. "Encouraging a value-based culture is a win-win situation for everyone," said Alex. It is first internally amongst the stakeholders and employees, they are the ones who the organisation first builds their credibility in front of. "With happy employees comes happy customers" he adds.

No matter where one is in the organisation, if one has to apply one statement in their lives daily it should be " Am I leaving this organisation better than I found this" says Antony.

He ended his session by highlighting how his organisation always try to improve further from what they have progressed so far through a value-driven approach.
