The pandemic has pivoted most educational institutes towards the online mode of delivering lectures. With the second wave hitting India in March-April’21, the chances of campuses opening up dimmed even further. Education and Teaching professionals with skills in online teaching and tutoring are in high demand as recruiters want a workforce comfortable with using digital mediums, going up by 8X in Jan-July’2021 vs 2020. Jobseekers too are gravitating towards WFH options. ‘Work from Home’, ‘Online Tutor’ and ‘Online Teaching’ are among the top searched keywords by jobseekers in August'21.

The overall job market started stabilizing in Dec’20 peaking in Feb’21 post the first wave with recruitment activities picking up across roles. The Education/Teaching profession too experienced growth, growing by 49 per cent in Feb’21 over Jan’21. The after effect of the second wave post-April ’21 saw degrowth in hiring but better preparedness this time around helped in recovery with an upward growth trajectory from June'21 onwards with robust sequential growth in Aug'21.

As of 2021, some key professionals that are in demand in the sector are teachers with subject matter expertise. Interesting roles that grew were of Academic Coordinator, Technical/Process Trainer, and Curriculum Designer and Guest Faculty also went up.

Career guidance and counselling are picking up pace with more institutes and students looking to get expert career advice. The requirement for counsellors with expertise in careers, academics, admissions and overseas education has grown exponentially in this year.

But some roles have been affected due to teaching being moved online. Ever since most residential campuses have stayed shut, there has been a direct impact in the hiring for roles such as Wardens, Librarians, Daycare teachers and Sports/Physical Education Teachers.

The hiring of professionals in fresher to early jobber roles gained the spotlight in the sector when compared to hiring of mid-management, with 81 per cent of jobs posted for teaching/education roles with 0-4 yrs experience. In terms of growth within the education profession by cities, Metros continue to dominate in hiring; 76 per cent of teaching roles are from the top 6 cities in India (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune) in 2021.
