Hard-working and honest employees are crucial to the efficient and productive functioning of any organization. It is also important to reward such employees for their contribution to the organization, as well as playing their part in maintaining a healthy office culture. On the other hand, it is also important to recognize employees that invest less of their time in working toward the company’s goal than they do towards their own.

Flattery is a common tactic used by employees to attract attention, praise, and rewards from their superiors. It is the responsibility of a management team or a manager to recognize and discourage flattery aimed at them, or at any of their coworkers. This can be done by recognizing true merit and talent among the workforce, as well as those who have consistently been performing well in their position and can be entrusted with more responsibility. Rewarding pleasing but inept employees can lead to situations where they are given tasks, projects, or responsibilities that they may not be equipped for or capable enough to handle. This can lead to poor company performance.

Employees may resort to tactics that allow them to be noticed more often by their superior, which can increase their chances of being called upon for assignments. It is thus the responsibility of the management to treat all employees based solely on merit, through periodic evaluations of their figures, performance, efficiency, skills, and conduct. This helps bring out employees that usually go unnoticed if they spend most of their time working the job assigned to them. Although not universally, but it is generally these employees that are the most skilled, equipped, and capable to handle tricky assignments and projects.
