Hiring in Retail Industry, E-Commerce has Shown Positive Signs of Recovery

There has been an upward trend in hiring activity in the Internet sector with a sequential recovery from July’20 onwards. Major hiring to prepare for the festive season is indicative in Aug’20, but has become flat through Sept’20.

The retail sector is showing a slow but steady sequential recovery but is still down by 48% in Sept’20 vs the Pre-COVID numbers. Retail was strongly hit by the lockdown restrictions, but the sector has been bouncing back with an uptick in hiring of 15% in Sept’20 versus Aug’20 even though it is still down by 50% at a Y-O-Y level. The positive growth can be seen from June’20 onwards, with a slight dip in July’20.

However, we can see the sector bouncing back further as we enter the festive season in the country. As more public spaces have opened up keeping social distancing in mind, we see movement pick up in retail spaces. Hiring too, has picked up accordingly.

Top roles that recruiters are hiring for include Retail Store Manager, Sales/Business Development Manager, Merchandiser, Software Developer, Tech Architect, Designer and Accountant. Roles such as Logistic Manager, Interior Designer, Warehouse Assistant and Tech Lead have seen a 100%, 66%, 44% and 42% growth in demand Y-O-Y. Keywords like Logistics and Retail Sales Executive are up by 247% and 500% in recruiter searches for the sector.

  • Bengaluru (26%), Delhi (13%) and Mumbai (11%) contribute to 51% of the jobs in the sectors
  • Companies like DMart, Reliance Industries, Walmart, Café Coffee Day and TESCO are looking for candidates

Hiring Activities in Internet & Ecommerce Industry

There has been an upward trend in hiring activity in the Internet sector with a sequential recovery since July’20 onwards. This is backed by various phases of unlocking along with the huge demand from consumers for daily essentials through online channels. Major hiring to prepare for the festive season is indicative in Aug’20, but has become flat through Sept’20.

Even though the Internet/E-commerce industry started seeing a decline in hiring since the start of the year, when we compare the Pre-COVID period, we see a high recovery; the sector is down by only 7% in Sept’20 compared to Feb’20.

Top roles that recruiters are hiring for include Software Developer, Sales/Business Development Manager, Logistics Manager, Social Media Manager, Testing Engineer, Graphic Designer, Telecalling Executive, and Business Analyst. Roles such as Logistic Manager, Testing Engineer, Graphic/Web Designer, Warehouse Manager and Software Developer have seen a 310%, 228%, 175%, 166%, and 140% growth in demand Y-O-Y. Even Digital Marketing and Pay Per Click Specialist roles have seen a growth of over 40% Y-O-Y.

  • Digital Marketing is amongst the top searched keywords by jobseekers on the Naukri platform, thereby showing high intent for such roles in the sector
  • Bengaluru (25%) and Delhi (30%) contribute to 54% of the jobs in the sector followed by Mumbai (10%) and Hyderabad (4%)
  • Companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Lenskart, Big Basket, PayTm, Udaan, Cars24 and UpGrad, are looking for candidates
